Technology

Hello everyone! First and foremost, thank you for visiting my blog!

For my first topic of my blog, I would like to give a brief description of the area that will be covered as I believe that blogs provide convenient, fast and effective ways for knowledge sharing, collaboration and communication with a broad range of the users. By referring to the title of my blog, "Profiles of the Technology", it will be about technology trends such as e-commerce technologies, digital business, and recent IT & Web developments in the market.

The rapid pace of technological change in the last two decades has highlighted the strong link between technological standards, market performance and economic welfare. The main reason being technology is vital for competitive advantage and, is a major drive of globalisation. Consider the following points:

  1. Does technology allow for products and services to be made more cheaply and to a better standard of quality?

  2. Do the technologies offer consumers and businesses more innovative products and services such as Internet banking, new generation telephones, etc?

  3. How does distribution change by new technologies e.g. books via the Internet, flight tickets, auctions, etc?

  4. Does technology offer companies a new way to communicate with consumers e.g. banners, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), etc?

In my opinion, I would agree with the reason of the existence of technology and would say yes for points 1, 2, 4, but to a certain extent depending on the individual’s technology adaptability and usage (either ethical or misused). Simply because:

  1. According to Wikipedia, not all technology has been used for peaceful purposes; the development of weapons of ever-increasing destructive power has progressed throughout history, from clubs to nuclear weapons. For example, the Roanoke Firearms, the store where Seung-Hui Cho bought the murder weapon he would use in his Virginia Tech rampage, has a history of selling guns which have ended up being involved in murders. (ABC News)

  2. Recent technological developments, including the printing press, the telephone, and the Internet, have lessened physical barriers to communication and have allowed humans to interact on a global scale.

  3. The rise of technology has allowed our environment to be characterised as a global one. “The global economy” gave business the ability to market products and services all over the globe. It has allowed them to develop partnerships and alliances throughout the world, which has become essential for success in today’s business.

  4. For the 3rd point above, E-commerce (sales aspect of e-business) has changed the way of business distribution by new technologies which consists of the buying and selling of products or services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks, for example Amazon.com,eBay.com, etc.

Additionally, it is vital to update and adapt ourselves with the rapid and recent knowledge of technology developments as we are living in the world towards globalisation. Why? No Offence, Watch the 16 seconds video to prove my point, don't miss it! This is because in reality, this situation is possible to happen to us if we neglect the knowledge and technological developments. Enjoy!

Do you agree?

In-depth session of technological developments and trends will be discussed in upcoming posts hoping to hear several opinions, feedbacks, and critiques from you.

Hello Zalina. Here are my two cents:

I disagree to say that products and services are now cheaper compare to the prices before the arrival of internet.
It is now more convenient for consumers to get the products and services they desired, however all these comes with a higher price. Reason being, there are still major amount of consumers who preferred to buy products at respective stores rather than online.

Provided better standards of quality, I would agree on this. As internet services are growing, we can see that more and more organisation are giving their best in improving their services.
Most obvious we can see is the competition between Microsoft and Google. Whereby Microsoft is having hard time competing with Google search. Despite the fact that this search is provided for free, but they are giving their best to get more visits which allow them to make better profits based on online advertising.

I agree with point number two. Technology does provide more innovative products and services.
Examples can be seen are CIMB Clicks and Maybank2u. Which these two nowadays, have succeed in giving ease for their consumers to handle their business or personal matters.
Distances are no longer a problem. Since there are messengers such as Yahoo! messenger, MSN messenger, and Google Talk which have closed the gaps of thousand of miles. Skype came with a better service offering phone services, called Skype phone. Price offered are much cheaper than local telco providers.

Technology does make it easy for us, the consumers in booking airline tickets, or buying books, reserving cinema tickets, etc. It even allows consumer from one country to buy a product from a different country.
However the drawback of these is security issue. Especially when it involves credit card transaction.
No doubt there are providers such as Verisign which can ensure you that your service provider are legal and can be trusted. Yet, how many of us really check on this?

I believe that, most of my answers here pretty much covered for question #4. Technology does help companies in providing better services and products for their customers. Nowadays customers are able to submit a feedback within a day or two after trying a particular product or services.

Thank you for your feedback Shidi, I appreciate it!

I would like to say that you are right that products and services are more expensive currently before the arrival of Internet because of the costs of the shipping services to deliver to you. But as the competition continuously increase because of the rapid development of technology, I think it is possible in the future that consumers will experience a more convenient way for the products and services they desired with a reasonable price. I just predict which we never know if it is not impossible, right?

In conclusion, I would say that technology is making each activity in the world today much more faster than before the existence of technology, which is the main advantage towards globalisation.

Hello Zalina, I really like your topic of discussion but its always good to raise our own opinions so here, I do not think that products are cheaper with the arrival of globalisation because most products today have increased in prices by at least 10 folds. Take food for example, one bowl of noodle pre-globalisation costs only about 5cents. It has now increased to about 5 dollars perbowl. However, I concur that standard of quality has escalated over the years due to the ever growing amount of companies battling to be the 'best'.

On a second note, although there may be a rise in innovative thinking and creations, there are also more online theft occuring in our society today. Internet banking for example, is convenient for many users in many ways however, these convenience results to theft and sorts. Online theft is an unevitable problem today with the rise of Internet usage and if this persists, individuals would discontinue using it. The only way to overcome it is if the goverment police the Internet more strictly.

Thirdly, as much as I would love to concur with you that distribution changed, it has also decreased our human interactions such as face to face communication. It is in our nature to communicate by using eye contacts, low and high pitched tones or body language. However, with the Internet, one can only type it all out which may result in miscommunication or misinterpretation.

Therefore, in my opinion, globalisation does not serve us much benefits (except convenience) but only draws us (human) further apart from each other.

No offence, I'm just saying whatever I feel, it may be wrong, it may be out of point, but I thought its nice to share our thoughts.
